Kevin Nairn - Design & technology technician
Name: Kevin Nairn
Job Role: Design & technology technician
School: Highgate Wood School, London
I have been a design & technology technician for 24 years. I'd previously worked in a variety of roles, including as an engineer, a shopfitter, an architectural metalworker, a carpenter and a builder. I saw the job for a design and technology technician in a local newspaper.
In a typical day at school, I spend most of the day ordering and preparing materials for student projects. This requires practical skills in woodwork, metalwork, plastics, general machining as well as computer skills and safety awareness.
The best thing about my job is working with young people, although the constant deadlines for student projects can be challenging.
I have City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering Technician qualifications. I have also done training in safety, first aid, current legislation in design & technology and union negotiating skills.
